Passing It Along

Conversation I had with my 16-year-old cousin a few days ago:

Cousin:  I just finished a really, really, really good book the other day.
Me:  Oh really?  What book?
Cousin:  It was one your sister let me borrow… The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  Ever heard of it?
Me:  Hah, yeah, that’s my copy she has.  It came out when I was in high school.
Cousin:  Oh, well, I liked it a lot.

I gave The Perks Of Being a Wallflower to my sister three years ago.  The last time I saw it, the cover is now taped on, the spine bent, pages dogeared.  My sister has let a handful of her friends borrow it.  I like that keeps getting passed along.  Can I think of it as practice for when I’m a librarian and recommending books on a daily basis?  That’s how I like to picture it.

I also like that my sister got the fourth season of The Office and that we’re currently watching it.

  • Have you seen the program for books that gives each book you own a number and information for a website that you can track its progress for where it goes? You have to give it away or sell it to a used bookstore, and people who get it have to go along with it, but it’s a pretty sweet idea.

  • No, that’s awesome! I’ll have to keep an eye out of it.
